Living Design

Think about these two posters for one minute. Both were probably designed by two different artists with no control outside of the artboard. Each of them composed their pieces with the understanding that they would be a unique and nuanced take on the movie they were promoting.

Then they met in the real world. Should either of these designers have changed? no but does the guy hanging the signs have a sense of humor and the ironic… possibly. Just beware that your design lives beyond you. Its’ value and worth is not contained in the boarders of the piece but rather in how the world around it treats the piece and interacts with the piece. You are doign that just by looking at it. taking its’ picture or laughing.

Still kind of a dark funny though

I don’t think i have to put too much emphasis on what went wrong in the design process here… Kudos to the party for recognizing the mistake, taking it in stride and moving on.

The same thing would have happened if a phallic object was placed in an incontinent place, a little south of the equator.

When Shock Ads go Wrong: Sort of (NSFW)

Shocking adverts are supposed to make you take step back and go WOW… This ad does it, but in the wrong direction. Tom Ford is well known for his Shocking Advertisements and cutting edge style. he has previously done NSFW ads features any combination of the following Naked ladies, naked Men, Naked Ironing, Painful things, nasty things… but they all spread and got noticed.

The problem with shock advertisements is that you need to always top what was done before. Have a bunch of naked ladies all over the steps? Go for naked men, for some reason this is more shocking. Mix and match taboo’s with things outside of the societal norm. Anything goes.

Hi new ad is for a perfume line. In an attempt to one up himself Tom created a very stylish ad in Russian GQ with a naked lady laying in front of him. The Scent strips are nestled into her shapely rear end. and he is sniffing some of the strips. If you remove the placement of the strips the rest of the ad is elegant, from the artistic pose the model strikes to the room behind the well dress Ford. but that one thing is the fly in the ointment.

Here is the problem, Does the placement of the strips make it look like the perfume is going to smell like a but? I think it does. Is this going to spread… yes yes it will. Does it have a better chance of being a 4chan meme than an ad for a top selling perfume… I think so. What do you think?

Accessible Content

Everyone wants their content to be accessible to as many people as possible, why not change the way you do things slightly to open your blog up to a whole different audience?  It isn’t that hard, a few minor tweaks.

color-wheelBlogs are an inherently visual media, from layout to color choice each decision that you make sets the website up as a canvas to be viewed. The problem with thinking that way is that there is a very voracious group of users who crave knowledge and want to consume content but are visually impaired, so you canvas means nothing to them, or does it?

As it turns out some small design changes can make your blog, or website much more accessible to blind and visually impaired users. A quick run down of the changes and choices which you need to take into consideration when designing your site, or making changes to the layout. Build from the left to the right, Putting your blog-roll on the right hand side allows for the first content picked up by screen readers to be the content of your site, and not the sites you link to.

Stop Sign

Always use the ALT text for images, if you put an image into your post, which I suggest you do as a way to break up the content, always add the description into the image. Be short and to the point describing the content of the image. You can see the alt text for existing images but hovering your mouse over the image, after a few seconds the text will appear on your screen. If nothing pops up chances are that image is white space to visually impaired readers.

Avoid using terms like Click Here, when describing links. This is just good web design, and good SEO. The sites and pages you link to gain and loose PageRank based off of the descriptive keywords you use to link to them. The reasons just multiply when you consider visual impaired readers who have no context to judge the link if click here is the only provenance given.

I’ve said this before but designers also need to take into consideration people who are color blind when designing their sites, if elements needed to navigate your site disappear for the colorblind visitor you are cutting a good portion of people out of your possible audience. You can always check to see how your site looks to the color blind.

The more barriers you place in between your readers and your content the less likely people are to stick around, it doesn’t matter how awesome you are, or how insightful your content might be, if no one can read it, it doesn’t matter.

An Imposing Wall

Design Session Podcamp Philly

Today I held a Design is Brutal open session at Podcamp Philly 2011 I wanted to say thank you to the people the offered up their sites for review. It is never easy facing criticism head on.

Personally I would rather hear what is wrong, then have people think it without me knowing. And that right there is the core concept behind this site. Work with me and I will give you a breakdown, a step by step walk through the deficiencies your current site has.  In the final report you will get a detailed analysis with actionable items. That means that this brutally honest review will give you things to work on and suggestions that you can impliment.

So a huge thank you to

For offering their websites up to have a whole classroom look at and pick apart.

Art… sarcasm and critique

So you you want an honest opinion about your site, design or graphic? That is what we do. We also roll out sarcasm and vitriolic self assessments as well. You know that little voice in your head that doubts talent and talks down everything you create? His name is Art, and he isn’t too happy.
